Data-Validated · Amazon India + Pepperfry Bestseller Scan · May 2026

The default 10-SKU list was wrong. Here's what the data actually says.

A scan of Amazon India bestsellers, Pepperfry category pages, and IndiaMART B2B listings across six furniture categories — what Indian buyers purchase, at what prices, with how many reviews. The verdict reshapes the launch plan: wardrobes lead, TV units are mass not mid-premium, and one entire SKU drops off the list.

Categories scanned6
Brands mapped22
Velocity tag found50,000+ orders
SKUs replaced4 of 10
Highest review SKU1,411 reviews
Section 1 · The Headline

Three findings that change the launch order

Each finding came from Amazon India / Pepperfry / IndiaMART listings observed during the scan, not from generic category logic. OBSERVED

Finding 1 · Wardrobes

Wardrobes are the strongest demand category — by an order of magnitude.

Wakefit's 2-door wardrobe shows "50,000+ recent orders" and "96% positive rating from over 100,000 customers" on Amazon India's category page. Single SKUs accumulate 1,200–1,300 reviews. No other category in the scan comes close.

Finding 2 · TV units

The Amazon India TV-unit sweet spot is ₹2K–₹8K, NOT ₹15K–₹40K.

Velocity tags ("100+ / 300+ / 600+ bought past month") cluster in the ₹1,500–₹6,500 mass tier. The ₹22K hero media console in the earlier draft list sits in a thin upper band where review counts collapse to under 300. Wrong price band for the hero SKU.

Finding 3 · Premium study desks

Premium study desks barely exist on Amazon India.

Amazon's study-desk price brackets cap at "over ₹17,000" with very few listings above ₹15K. The ₹15K–₹30K range is an IndiaMART B2B / corporate channel — not D2C. The ₹9,500 desk in the earlier draft is mass-tier, not mid-premium. Drop this SKU entirely or reposition as ₹5K mass.

The one-liner

The mid-premium ₹15K–₹40K band exists in only 2 of the 6 categories (wardrobes & some TV units). Coffee tables and bookshelves sell in the ₹3K–₹12K band. Study desks split into mass (Amazon) and corporate (IndiaMART). Sideboards are a small but designer-friendly niche. The new 10-SKU list reflects this.

Section 2 · How the Scan Was Done

Methodology & what the data does and does not tell us

What was searched

Amazon India (amazon.in), Pepperfry (pepperfry.com), IndiaMART (m.indiamart.com), and brand sites (Wakefit, Wooden Street, BLUEWUD, DeckUp), captured during the scan in late May 2026. For each category the top 8–15 listings were sampled, recording brand, price, rating, review count where visible, "X+ bought in past month" velocity tags, and Best Seller / Amazon's Choice badges where shown.

  • Price band: ₹2,000–₹40,000 (broader than ₹10K–₹40K to capture where bestsellers actually live)
  • Materials: engineered wood / MDF / particle board (NOT solid Sheesham/mango wood)
  • Bias check: bestseller URLs were scanned deliberately, not "engineered wood" filter URLs, to see what Amazon promotes — not just what's available
  • 22 named brands tracked across 6 categories

What this data tells us — and what it doesn't

Tells us: surface demand by category, dominant brands, price points where reviews cluster, velocity tags, finish/material patterns. Doesn't tell us: profit margin per SKU, return rates, repeat purchase, channel margin (Amazon takes 12–18%), warranty cost. Treat this as a snapshot of where Amazon India shoppers click, not a forecast of profitability. Margin validation needs a manufacturer quote.

Section 3 · Cross-Category Insights

Demand intensity by category — review counts of top-3 listings

Aggregate review count of each category's top 3 Amazon India bestsellers. Wardrobes lead by 3× — strong demand signal. Bookshelves and sideboards are smaller but less crowded.

Where the Amazon India sweet spot actually is — bestseller price clusters

Each dot = a bestseller listing observed in this scan. The mass tier (₹2K–₹8K) is where velocity tags live; the mid-premium ₹15K–₹40K band is thin except in wardrobes.

Section 4 · The Six Categories, One by One

Each table below records what was observed on Amazon India and Pepperfry during the scan. Where exact data (e.g., precise BSR rank, exact review count for older listings) wasn't visible, this is stated openly. OBSERVED

Pepperfry · RoyaloakGenting TV unit (Brown/Grey, dual-tone melamine)~12,000–18,000——58% off · "India's no.1 furniture brand"
Synthesis: TV units are a high-volume mass-tier category. The bestseller (BLUEWUD wall unit at ₹1,499 with 875 reviews + 600 bought/month) sits at 1/15th the price of the ₹22K hero in the earlier draft. Wakefit's mid-premium TV units (₹7K–₹13K) clock under 600 reviews each. The ₹22K–₹38K media console band is competitively thin but also has thin demand — those Amazon listings show under 100 reviews. Implication for the launch: if TV units are made, the hero should be a ₹7K–₹12K mid-tier 4-5 foot floor unit, not a ₹22K–₹38K media console.

Synthesis: Wardrobes are the #1 demand category by every metric — single SKU review counts of 1,200+, brand-page claims of "50,000+ recent orders," 96% positive rating from 100,000+ customers. The dominant SKU is the 2-door wardrobe in walnut/dark brown at ₹14K–₹18K. The 3-door version sits at ₹28K–₹32K. Brands stacked here: Wakefit, Solimo, Spacewood, Godrej Interio, Nilkamal, CASPIAN, Pepperfry's own "Mintwud". Implication: the wardrobe should be the hero SKU of the launch, not the TV unit.

Coffee Tables / Center Tables

CelloOasis coffee table (plastic blend, ice brown) — 3-yr warranty~2,000–3,000——Budget winner
Synthesis: Coffee tables sell at ₹4K–₹6K mass tier in engineered wood, with Wakefit owning 4 of the top 5 SKUs (Robusta, Java, Excelsa, Breve — each at ~500 reviews). The premium Sheesham solid-wood "Caturra" sits at ~₹12K–₹16K. Implication: the ₹11,500 coffee table in the earlier draft was over-priced for engineered wood, under-priced for Sheesham. Reposition to ₹6,500–₹8,500 mid-tier engineered wood OR drop entirely.

IndiaMART (B2B)M Cube Spaces (Bengaluru)Toshi premium study table30,3994.3 ★23 ratings — small project channel
Synthesis: The study desk market splits cleanly: Amazon India sells mass-tier (₹3K–₹8K) study desks at high velocity (one SKU = 1,200 reviews + 400 bought/month, "Best Seller in Computer Workstations"). Mid-premium ₹15K+ desks are an IndiaMART B2B / corporate-furniture channel — not a D2C play. Green Soul's premium ergonomic line (₹15K–₹28K) is the one exception, branded explicitly as ergonomic office, not "study desk". Implication: the ₹9,500 study desk in the earlier draft straddles both channels poorly. Cut it — or restage as a ₹5,500 Amazon SKU.
CATEGORY 5

Sideboards / Crockery / Buffet Cabinets

Smaller demand pool · Designer-friendly

MadesaCompact kitchen set (120cm wide, 5 niches + 1 drawer, brown/beige)~14,000–18,000—Kitchen sideboard variant
Synthesis: Sideboards are smaller-volume but exist in a true mid-premium ₹18K–₹28K band. Wakefit Kimani and Uruk are the engineered-wood category anchors. Solid-wood Sheesham sideboards from SHIKHA, AMAZART, PS DECOR (small unbranded sellers) sit higher at ₹22K–₹32K and compete on "real wood" appeal. Review counts are modest (often under 200) because the absolute category is smaller — but the price band is healthier. Implication: sideboards are a strong "designer-friendly" SKU at ₹18K–₹26K — keep this in the list.

Synthesis: Bookshelves are mass-tier — most bestsellers sit at ₹3K–₹7K. ABOUT SPACE dominates with its 5-tier and 6-tier walnut models (the brand held the Amazon India "Bookcases" bestseller slot during the scan). DeckUp anchors the ₹6.5K–₹10K mid-tier designer slot. The ₹14,000 5-tier bookshelf in the earlier draft is significantly over-priced for this category. Implication: keep a bookshelf in the list but at ₹5,500–₹7,500 positioning, with a designer finish edge.

Category fit score — which categories belong in the launch

Wardrobes and sideboards lead. Study desk is the clear cut.

The hierarchy

HEROES (build 2–3 SKUs each): Wardrobes + Sideboards — the only two categories with healthy mid-premium ₹15K–₹40K AOV AND architect-friendly designer appeal. SUPPORTING (build 1–2 SKUs each): TV units, coffee tables, bookshelves — reposition to where Amazon India actually buys (₹5K–₹12K mid-tier, not ₹15K+ premium). SKIP: Study desks for D2C launch — split market kills clean positioning. Optional: keep one ₹5,500 mass-tier study desk as a catalog filler later.

Engineered wood, large format (~140 cm wide), 4 drawers + 2 compartments. Premium sideboard for dining rooms and architect-specified projects.

Evidence: Wakefit Uruk sideboard (Urban Teak + Frosty White, 4 drawers, 2 compartments) anchors this slot at ₹22–28K MRP. The Attic Georgia sideboard pushes to ₹28–38K on premium mango wood. Headroom exists at ₹26K–₹30K with veneer-on-MDF.

6-foot Floor TV Unit with 2 drawers + 2 close shelves (Columbian Walnut + Pumice Grey)

Engineered wood, premium two-tone finish, large floor format up to 65"+. Captures the upper Wakefit mid-tier slot.

Evidence: Wakefit Allie TV unit (Columbian Walnut + Pumice Grey, 2 drawers + 2 close shelves) at ~₹13K. Wakefit Frasier large-format TV unit at ~₹17K MRP with Sheesham legs. The ₹13K–₹17K floor TV unit slot looks open for a new entrant with architect-led design.

2-Drawer Coffee Table (engineered wood, walnut)

Engineered wood with solid wood legs, 2 drawers + open shelf. Repositioned from ₹11.5K (over-priced) to ₹6.5K–₹8.5K — the Wakefit Java / Robusta band where 500+ reviews accumulate.

Engineered wood, 5 open tiers, walnut or wenge finish. Repositioned from ₹14K (over-priced) to ₹5.5K–₹7.5K — the ABOUT SPACE bestseller band.

Evidence: ABOUT SPACE 5-tier bookshelf walnut — #1 in Amazon India Bookcases during the scan. DeckUp Awana sits higher at ₹7K–₹9.5K with matte finish — premium ceiling.
MRP ₹6,500FOB $38 export
SKU 09 · KEPTCROSS-SELL

Bedside Table (pair, engineered wood, walnut veneer)

Engineered wood + walnut veneer, 2 drawers, designed as a pair. Low-return, high-attach-rate cross-sell for the wardrobe heroes.

Evidence: Pair sales are the bedroom cross-sell pattern — observed in Wakefit, Wooden Street, Pepperfry Mintwud bundles. Pricing aligned to the ₹6K–₹9K bedside pair-pack norm on Amazon India.
MRP ₹7,500FOB $42 export
SKU 10 · NEWDESIGNER

Console / Entryway Table (engineered wood + solid wood legs, walnut)

Slim engineered wood top + 4 solid Sheesham/mango legs, 1 drawer optional. Architect-favourite hallway/entryway statement piece.

Evidence: Entryway consoles appear frequently as design anchors in Indian architect and interior portfolios; Pepperfry "Modern TV Consoles" category includes console table variants. The ₹13K–₹16K mid-premium console band appeared to be held by small designer brands without a dominant player.
MRP ₹13,500FOB $78 export

What changed in the SKU mix

2 wardrobes added (were 1) — the biggest demand signal in the scan calls for more wardrobes, not fewer. 2 sideboards now (were 1) — the mid-premium ₹18–28K band is healthy. 2 TV units repositioned down from ₹22K/₹38K to ₹10.5K/₹15.5K. Coffee table dropped from ₹11.5K to ₹7.5K. Bookshelf dropped from ₹14K to ₹6.5K. Study desk dropped entirely from the launch — bad fit. Shoe cabinet dropped — no evidence of category strength in the scan; replaced by a second sideboard.

The pricing reality check

Old list blended MRP ≈ ₹17,950 per SKU. New list blended MRP ≈ ₹15,750 per SKU. But the two wardrobe heroes alone (₹16.5K + ₹29.5K = ₹46K combined) carry a much stronger demand signal than the original media console hero. Lower blended price, stronger demand-backed revenue potential.

Section 8 · Caveats & What This Doesn't Cover

What marketplace data tells us — and what it doesn't

Caveat 1 · Snapshot, not 12-month trend

Every listing was observed during the scan (May 2026). Amazon India ratings, "bought past month" tags, and BSR badges shift weekly. Treat this as where demand sat that week, not as a 12-month seasonal forecast. Re-scan quarterly before any major SKU expansion.

Caveat 2 · Reviews ≠ profit

1,299 reviews tells us a wardrobe sells; it doesn't tell us if Wakefit makes money on it. Amazon takes 12–18% commission. Return rates on heavy furniture run 4–8%. Carrier damage adds 1–3%. A manufacturer quote is the missing variable — get unit cost confirmed before locking SKU mix.

Caveat 3 · No solid wood signals captured

The scan was scoped to engineered wood / MDF / particle board only. Solid Sheesham/mango sideboards sit alongside engineered wood in the same Amazon listings but compete on a different value proposition ("real wood"). A solid-wood line would be a second hero line with different unit economics.

Caveat 4 · Brand competition is real

Wakefit, Wooden Street, BLUEWUD, ABOUT SPACE, DeckUp, Spacewood, Solimo (Amazon's own brand), Nilkamal, Godrej Interio, Pepperfry's Mintwud — all are direct competitors in this lane. A new brand enters a crowded market. Differentiation must come from design (architect-led), finish quality, or the B2B/architect channel — not a price war.

Caveat 5 · IndiaMART B2B = hidden upside

IndiaMART listings show many study desks, sideboards, and TV units in the ₹15K–₹35K band sold by small workshops to corporate buyers. This channel is the architect/contractor lane — not D2C. An architect network is the right access point; Amazon India is just the consumer-side validation.

Caveat 6 · What the scan couldn't see

Amazon India hides precise BSR rank numbers, doesn't share return rates publicly, and review counts on newer listings are noisy. Pepperfry doesn't expose listing-level review counts as cleanly. Estimated review counts ("~50–100", "~500+") are calibrated from observation, not exact. Exact numbers are cited where available (1,299, 1,187, 1,411).

What to validate next, before manufacturing

Step 1: For each of the new 10 SKUs, get the manufacturer's all-in unit cost. Target: blended unit cost ≤ 38% of MRP (to leave room for Amazon's take, GST, shipping, returns, and ~25% net margin). Step 2: Ask practising architects which 3 of these SKUs they specify most often for residential projects. The intersection is the launch order. Step 3: Run a 90-day Amazon India pilot on the top 3 SKUs (1 wardrobe + 1 sideboard + 1 TV unit) before scaling SKU count.

The data says: lead with wardrobes, not media consoles.

The original 10-SKU list was a reasonable furniture-industry default, but it priced into a band Amazon India doesn't reward. The new list pivots the hero from TV unit (₹22K, weak demand at that band) to wardrobe (₹16.5K, strongest observed demand). It drops two unfit SKUs (study desk, shoe cabinet) and adds two (4-door sideboard, second wardrobe variant). Same capital envelope, better demand-backed potential.

Next move: get manufacturer quotes on these 10 SKUs and check that landed cost averages ≤ ₹6,000 (38% of ₹15,750 blended MRP).
